Fine Art Finesse – The new Canon PRO Series

Are you searching for a large-format printer that can produce stunning prints with exceptional quality and durability?  Look no further than the new Canon imagePROGRAF PRO series of 12-ink printers.

Designed for the photography and fine art markets, these printers offer a range of features and benefits that make them stand out from the crowd.

The new Canon imagePROGRAF PRO series comprises three models: the 60” PRO-6600, the 44” PRO-4600, and the 24” PRO-2600, replacing the imagePROGRAF PRO-6100, PRO-4100, and PRO-2100.  These models can print on a variety of media types and sizes, including gloss, matte, fine art paper, and canvas.

The new pigment ink set, LUCIA PRO II, delivers the highest photo print quality of any imagePROGRAF.  This ink has improved the reproduction of darker shades and the black density on fine art papers and expanded the dark areas of the colour gamut to render detailed shades of grey.  The new inks give the printed image a truly realistic, almost 3D-quality appearance, with no loss of colour or detail.

Print free-size borderless.  If you don’t want a border, just say so.  The printer can be instructed to print edge-to-edge on any size roll thanks to a clever built-in sensor that measures the width of your loaded media, so it can print right to the edge as instructed, with no white border, and no wasted media.

The new PRO II ink has a light-resistant pigment that dramatically increases colour fastness, allowing prints to be preserved for up to 200 years without fading.  Improved scratch resistance on photographic papers makes handling, mounting, and finishing easier.

The new Canon PRO series uses simplified settings and easier media handling.  Dual roll capability allows a second roll of a different media type and size to be available at the same time so that you can automatically switch from printing on matte to gloss paper without interrupting the workflow.

The printers also have a user-friendly colour display that shows you the printer status and settings at a glance.

The new Canon 12-ink imagePROGRAF PRO series printers are perfect for anyone who wants to achieve exquisite, high-quality, and durable prints for photos and fine art.  Whether you’re a professional photographer, a fine art printer, or a hobbyist who loves to capture and print memories, you will find that these printers meet your needs and expectations. Your creativity and imagination have no limits.

Four exciting new models – DesignJet T850 and T950 Series Printers and MFPs

October 2023 sees HP launch the brand new DesignJet T850 series and T950 series printers and MFPs.  These pigment based ink printers bridge the gap perfectly  between CAD printing and longer lasting image displays, which gives offices and studios the capability to produce both print types in house and have greater control.

The sleek, dark T850 printer offers easy printing from A3 to A0 size with auto switching between sheets and rolls which is great for users printing remotely using the HP App.  The new pigmented HP Flex ink system ensures longer lasting, smudge-resistant prints, whilst improved security gives peace of mind from cyber attacks.  Its T850 MFP multifunctional companion has all the same features, with the addition of an integrated CIS front loading scanner, thus enhancing the functions to copy, scan and print.

The lighter coloured T950 has the capability to load longer 91mt rolls and 2 or 3 inch core media (CN538A adapter purchase necessary), means more flexibility with paper types from standard 90gsm plotter rolls to matt coated presentation media and even satin and gloss photo papers. Add to all this the output tray for A3 and the larger flat print stacker on the lighter coloured T950 series, and you can see why HP has taken print organisation to another level whilst enabling multiple print types and even water-resistant prints to everyday users. Likewise The T950 MFP boasts all the same features with the addition of the integrated CIS front loading scanner, thus enhancing the functions to copy, scan and print

HP Launches DesignJet T850 and T950 with sustainability in mind

HP has been mindful of the end user’s commitment to sustainability and the environment, manufacturing the bodies of both the T850 and T950 using 40% recycled plastic.  Furthermore all the HP 738 cartridges available for these new models are recyclable too.

HP DesignJet inks can be recycled – for more information go to https://www.hp.com/go/recycle

What are the main differences between the T850 and the T950 models?

  • The T850 models have a dark coloured body, whilst the T950 has a light coloured body style
  • The T850 takes a maximum 10cm roll diameter so 45-50mt long, whereas the T950 can handle a 14cm roll diameter roll so 91mts in length
  • The T950 models have the extra A3 output tray and the larger print stacker for roll prints which can lay up to 40 prints flat ready for collection
  • The T850 models have a print speed of 25 secs for an A1, whereas the T950 models are slightly faster at 21 secs

How are the new models different from previous HP DesignJet printers?

Up to now HP had separated its models clearly into CAD printers using dye based inks, and Graphics or Photo printers using pigment based inks.  The dye based ink is not smudge resistant so it could fade over time.  These new T850 and T950 models bridge that gap perfectly, offering users the capability to print excellent CAD work and also superb image prints with archival ink.  Whilst the T850 still takes only 45-50mt rolls, the T950 can handle a longer 91mt CAD plotter paper roll on 2 inch core as standard and, if you purchase the 3 inch core adaptors (CN538A), you can load 3 inch core media too.  Many heavier weight display and photo papers are supplied on 3 inch core to prevent too much curl as you near the end of the roll sp those limits have been lifted.

So there you go!  An all round everyday HP office machine that can print A3 to A0 and cover all your print types with long lasting colour and great line definition on a wider variety of sheet and roll papers than ever before.

We have exciting news from Canon that they are launching new A1 and A0 printers onto the wide format market which means improved printing in the TM series of wide format printers.

Canon’s new A1 and A0 printers

There will be 5 new improved models to choose from which will replace some of the current TM series best sellers so here is what’s to come…

36 inch Models

24 inch models

These new Canon A1 and Ao printers will replace the 24 inch TA-20, TM-200 and  TM-205, and the 36 inch TA-30, TM-300, and TM-305 respectively.

Feature of the new Canon A1 and A0 printers

The new range covers a wide variety of printing needs which covers everyday CAD plans and drawings, to signage and promotional posters.  This is the perfect partner for shops, restaurants, schools and more. They are ideal for offices and design studios who want to print everyday drawings and bring their display printing in-house.  It’s the ideal way to save money on outsourcing printing and to keep control of an efficient and speedy workflow.

New Canon A1 and A0 printers are faster

The improved Canon TM range uses a new image processing unit for faster start-up, therefore the TM-355/350 has rapid print speeds of up to 3.2 A1 pages per minute.  This is around 25% faster than the TM-300 and TM-305.

Strong Impact, even on uncoated paper

The improved inks on the new TM series will let you produce high-impact images, even using uncoated papers. A new magenta ink gives excellent red colour performance for sharper contrast and greater clarity which means more vibrant images. All Canon TM printers use water-resistant pigment inks which are smudge resistant, so you can print eye catching posters and POS materials that won’t fade. What’s more all the new Canon A1 and A0 printers print borderless so there’s no need to trim!

Improved design and interface

The new ‘flat-top’ design makes it easy to change paper rolls.  The printers detect and display the paper type and calculate the amount of paper remaining.  This, with colour calibration included as standard, reduces work to achieve greater efficiency. The large touchscreen can be tilted and the angle adjusted for better vision.

Oh so quiet

Operating noise is approximately a third lower than the previous TM models.  This is reduced to 35 decibels (dB) in standby and 41 decibels (dB) in operation depending on the model, allowing use in any workplace.

Progress in sustainability

Canon is committed to reducing waste and environmental impact across all operations.  The new TM series has achieved Gold certification across the new range in the US Epeat Registry, the highest level in the imaging equipment segment. Expanded polystyrene has been eliminated from product packaging materials and replaced with recyclable cardboard.

Software that makes it easy to create brochures and posters

TM printers can use the Canon Direct Print Plus software.  It allows multiple files, in different formats, to be sorted for batch printing by simply dragging and dropping.  This tool helps you to print all types of drawings more efficiently.  For promotional work, you can use PosterArtist, a web-based application that allows you to create original poster and brochure designs using a wide range of free templates.

Important information from Epson

Epson end production of inks, announcing that it will no longer manufacture two ranges of ink which are used in its wide format photographic printers.  The end of line of these cartridges will affect the SC-P series models, meaning customers will need to make some changes.

Epson end production of inks – which cartridges will be affected?

  • C13T804xxx 700ml inks
  • C13T824xxx 350ml inks

Epson end production of inks – which Epson photo printers will this affect?

These cartridges are used in Epson Surecolour SC-P7000, SC-P8000 and SC-P9000 printer models.

You will still be able to purchase the T804 and T824 inks whilst stocks last, but as they become obsolete these printers will require the new replacement inks.

What’s the reason behind the decision for Epson to end production of inks?

For a small range of Epson printer inks, the “ink low” communication in the printer status monitor has changed. This is due to the discontinuation in production of a component currently used within those ink cartridges. Due to the change in components, ink consumption is now calculated based on the printing of different sized dots, and ink usage must now be estimated rather than accurately tracked. As a result, varying levels of ink could remain in each cartridge. The price of the cartridges will be reduced to reflect this which is good news for the customer.  Customers will still benefit from the same high quality and high reliability of Epson genuine ink, which is not impacted by the change.

What will I need to do?

You will need to update your printer firmware.  This is essential before swapping to a new type of ink cartridge.  Updating the firmware can start immediately so it’s best to perform this as soon as possible.

Before you install the new ink cartridge in your printer, it’s important that you update the firmware to the latest version. If this update is not performed, your printer will display an error message and it will not function. This can be solved by following the instructions on the cartridge packaging and on the leaflet enclosed with your new cartridge. You can also access the instructions here https://www.epson.co.uk/support

What are the new replacement inks?

The new cartridges for the SC-P6000, SC-P7000, SC-P8000 and SC-P9000 are as follows:

I’ve installed the new replacement ink cartridge in my printer but now it’s not working. What has happened?

Before you install the new ink cartridge in your printer, it’s important that you update the firmware to the latest version. If this update is not performed, your printer will display an error message and it will not function. This can be solved by following the instructions on the cartridge packaging and on the leaflet enclosed with your new cartridge. You can also access the instructions here (include link on webpage)

Why is there so much ink left in the ink cartridge?

Due to the change in components, ink consumption is now calculated based on the printing of different sized dots. The number of dots and their size can vary depending on the resolution of the image to be printed. The removal of the sensor component means that ink usage must now be estimated rather than accurately tracked resulting in varying levels of ink being left in each cartridge at the time they request replacement. The price of the cartridges will be reduced to compensate for this change.

How much ink is left in the ink cartridge?

The amount of ink left in the cartridge will vary depending on a number of factors including the resolution and quality of printed images, image selection and print settings. The amount of ink left in each cartridge will vary depending on usage. To compensate, Epson has reduced the price of the ink cartridge.

Do I have to change the ink cartridge more frequently?

The frequency of ink cartridge changes will vary depending on the resolution and quality of printed images.

HP end production of Z Series Printer Inks, announcing that cartridges compatible with their Z Series photo printer range, will be discontinued later this year.

HP to End Production of Z Series Printer Inks

As part of HP’s portfolio management process, HP has decided, as from 1st November 2023, to no longer offer the HP Large Format DesignJet ink cartridge and printhead SKUs listed below:

Why should I use HP Original ink and toner? Here are some of the biggest perks to consider…

Consistent high-quality black and colour prints

When it comes to routine printer use, HP Original ink and toner’s biggest advantage is quality. Accuracy is sharp and quality is consistent when you use your HP printer with a corresponding HP cartridge. They are designed to work specifically with your device to provide crisp black-and-white prints and vibrant colours.

When it comes to print quality, new cartridges win out against remanufactured or refilled options. If you’re concerned about environmental impact, you needn’t worry thanks to conscientious supply chain management. Later in this article, we explain how HP® maintains an environmentally friendly, closed-loop approach to its cartridge supply chain.

Easy to recycle and environmentally friendly

HP® has made recycling cartridges as straightforward and easy as possible. Your cartridge and printer should come with clear instructions and materials from HP Planet Partners for recycling, but you can start the process directly via the HP supplies recycling page. For more information about recycling and other green initiatives at HP®, you can also check out the HP Cartridge Recycling Hub.

If you’re focused on minimizing environmental impact, you can organize your next big purchase or resupply with the HP Sustainability Buyer’s Guide. It highlights a wide variety of HP’s most green products, featuring high-quality recycled materials and many devices certified by EPEAT® and ENERGY STAR®, which denotes superior energy efficiency.

Convenient and reliable

In addition to providing consistent colours and prints, working with new HP ink and toner cartridges is just a good way to guarantee simplicity. When you rely on a fresh unit after your last cartridge runs out, you’re always going to maximize convenience and minimize disruptions to the rest of your routine.

HP cartridges are designed to work with their compatible devices, and they come with clear accessibility instructions for installation. This also helps to make the replacement process quick and easy every time.

Secure product design

While you may not think of it as a potential liability, printers and cartridges are vulnerable to security threats. That’s why HP printers are designed for security, and so are HP ink and toner cartridges. They include features like tamper-resistant packaging and cartridge-chip security, as well as a security label so you can verify the products’ authenticity.

The end of life of these cartridges will affect the following HP DesignJet Z Series printers:

  • HP DesignJet Z2100
  • HP DesignJet Z3100
  • HP DesignJet Z3200
  • HP DesignJet Z5200

If the end of line of these HP supplies affects your printer, get in touch with the experts at GDS and we can offer advice on the latest models to keep your business running without interruption.
